Tonsils are part of the body’s defence system, so surgeons prefer to keep them when they are working well. Problems arise when they become a source of repeated illness or obstruction.
When surgery is considered
Frequent infections within a year that disrupt school or work, tonsils so large that they affect breathing, sleep or swallowing, or complications such as a recurring abscess are common reasons.
What the consultation covers
Your ENT surgeon will review the pattern of infections, examine the throat and explain whether medicines alone are enough or surgery is likely to help.
Recovery
Most people return to normal routines within one to two weeks with proper hydration, diet and pain control, and a follow-up visit to check healing.
